High Speed Photography - Stroboscopic Flash settings for stroboscope light

Taking really cool photos that have a "ghosting" trail is easy - just use your stroboscopic setting on your flash.

In this video, I will show you how to set and adjust the stroboscopic setting on a Canon 580 EXII speedlite. However, this will work with most modern off-camera flash.

FIRST - you may ask what is "stroboscopic" flash? This is when the off-camera flash is set to pulse several time rather than just once. What this does (especially when shooting is ark situations) is capture a moving subject is different spots on the same image.

There are three settings you need to pay attention to.

Number of Flashes - this is how many times you want it to pulse

Hertz (Hz) - this is the rate of the pulses. 1 hz is one flash per second, 2 hz is two flashes per second, etc.

Power - this is the power output of each flash.

To calculate the minimum shutter duration, take the total number of flashes you set and divide by the rate of the pulses (hz). For example, 20 flashes at a rate of 4 hz (4 flashes per second) needs a shutter open for 5 seconds.

Note that the more flashes you want in the pulse, the lower the power has to be.

However, this can be good. The lower the power of the flash, the shorter time it is "lit", and the better it captures fast moving objects.
