The surgery which is done for hyperhidrosis is called as endoscopic thoracic ganglionectomy where there are certain nerves in the spine which supply the hands, the armpit, the legs etc which cause excessive sweating. So these nerves are selectively cut off without damaging the nerves that are useful this surgery is useful when the patient has tried all other methods and is not responding sufficiently. It is also done for a person who doesn’t want to use medication’s or iontophoresis or botox injections because these are temporary. Surgery offers a long term or permanent solution and when done under the right hands it has a very high success rate of about 93%. The main adverse effect of the surgery is the patient may develop something called as compensatory hyperhidrosis, that is the area where the nerves have been cut the sweat reduces to that area but the sweat increases in other areas and the patient might start sweating in other areas were they don’t have sweat earlier. But it certainly helps to improve the quality of life of the patient. The main area which bothers the patient is sweating of the palms and the armpit and that is greatly reduced after the surgery.
