This is a powerful pair of Dharma talks offered by Willie Mukei Smith, senior student of Village Zendo, and by Reverend Gihan Un-no of Soto Shu and Abbot of Eisho-ji temple in Kitakami, Japan. In his Dharma words, Mukei deeply reflects on the significance and history of Juneteenth, and connects that history to recent events in our society and in our own inner struggles against racism. In his talk, “Heart of Compassion, Words of Gentleness," Rev. Un-no offers an intimate portrait of the personal devastation caused by the atomic bombing of Nagasaki through the testimony of a survivor, Etsuko, about the bombing's impact on her family.
The Village Zendo is a community of people who come together to practice in the Soto Zen tradition. Based in downtown New York City, we offer zazen (sitting meditation), one-on-one instruction with a teacher, dharma talks, chanting services, retreats, workshops and study groups.
