James Conlon, conductor and artistic director of Los Angeles Opera, coaches NWS horn alum Nick Castellano on opera excerpts from Verdi's Don Carlo, Beethoven's Fidelio, and Puccini's Tosca.
Conlon shares his opinion on the importance of understanding the context of the excerpt and the context in which you are playing. In the case of Don Carlo, the scene is one of monastic austerity and the sound should reflect that - with the character of granite or marble. Conlon then goes on to explain how instrumental melodies often are meant to be sung and as such, should be phrased in that way.
