Is that a humidor or headphones? Oppo's super chic PM-1 deliver the wow from the outside in

Описание: If you're going to drop $1100 on a pair of headphones, they had better deliver an out-of-box experience that makes you feel like you're Hugh Hefner in his glory days (that would be, like, all the days, right?). Indeed, breaking into the PM-1′s packaging is a lot like that.

Really, it's like a Matryoshka doll of audiophile goodies. Inside a cardboard box is yet another box -- the sort you'd expect a really, really expensive pair of shoes to live in -- and inside that velvet lined box is a gorgeous, high-gloss lacquered wooden box you almost don't want to touch for fear your fingerprints will taint its polished purity. But if we were to stop there, we'd never get to the really good stuff: Oppo's new PM-1 planar magnetic headphones.

Unlike the headphones you're used to seeing most folks wear on the street, the PM-1 do not use miniaturized versions of the speaker cones you see in traditional speakers. Instead, the PM-1 use a thin, light, and transparent film that moves according to an electromagnetic charge. Oppo says it has fashioned its planar magnetic drivers such that they are uniformly driven across their entire surface, supposedly resulting in a perfect blend of highs and lows: high efficiency, high resolution, low distortion.

Of course, it doesn't matter how marvelous a headphone sounds if it isn't comfortable to wear -- a consideration clearly not lost on Oppo. The PM-1 have a way of naturally conforming to the shape of your head without any effort. Just put them on, and everything falls into place.

The PM-1′s supreme comfort can be attributed to earpad cushions fashioned of latex and lined with soft lambskin, which graces the headband as well. An additional set of velvet earpads are packaged within a denim carrying case for a different kind of feel and sound. Also included is both a standard 1/8-inch headphone cable for use with mobile devices and most computer headphone outputs, and a much longer 1/4-inch, cloth-covered cable for high-end electronics and mixing boards.
