In Steiner’s 4th Mystery Drama, during an initiation rite in Ancient Egypt, the initiation “fails”. Something different was required by human evolution at that time, since these old rites were not suited to the developing “I” of humanity. During the First World War, at a time when literary texts were sent out in cigarette packets to soldiers at the front, Rudolf Steiner chose to include this particular initiation scene in his 4th Drama. Why, one may ask why, in the midst of world-crisis, did Steiner feel that the substance of this scene would be important for people to contemplate. What was depicted in this scene offers, one might say, a prototype for what humaninty as a whole is now confronting. As depicted in this scene, so now, great courage is needed if this path is to be trodden. In our joint lecture, we shall explore this scene and consider its possible relevance for us today with reference to the qualities and preconditions needed if the experience of “I” is to unfold in the individual human soul.
Dr. James Dyson is now a full-time adult educator in the fields of anthroposophic medicine, psychology and psychosomatics. He also lectures frequently within the wider anthroposophic movement. In his teaching he hopes to stimulate capacities for interpersonal relationships and collaborative working. James qualified as a medical doctor in 1975 and, following further practical training, was the co-founder of Park Attwood Clinic in 1979, an anthroposophic residential facility, registered for both mental health and general medicine, where he worked intensively with a multidisciplinary team for 25 years. James went on to complete a five year “in-person” training in Applied Psychosynthesis at the Institute of Psychosynthesis, London, later gaining a Masters' degree in Psychosynthesis Psychology from Middlesex University in 2013. James currently contributes to six anthroposophically accredited therapeutic trainings, four based at Emerson College, UK and two in the USA.
Richard Ramsbotham is a writer and theatre director, who lives in Stroud, England. He has written many articles on current events for ‘New View’ magazine and has translated all four of Steiner’s Mystery Dramas. (Rudolf Steiner Press, 2023) He also co-runs ‘Fourfold Living Arts’, an initiative bringing together the performing arts with important cultural issues and current events.
