Properties of AAC Block:
Density : 550-700 kg/m3
Compressive Strength : 3-4 NKg/m2
Fire Resistant: 240-360 mins (Max.)
Thermal Insulation : 0.16 W/m2k
Sound Reduction: 45 for 200mm thick wall
Cost-Benefit: Savings in Steel & Concrete
Breakage: Less than 5%
Size Variations : 1.5mm(+/-)
AAC Blocks:
Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) is a lightweight, precast, Blocks. It is manufactured through a reaction of aluminum and a proportionate blend of lime, cement, and fly ash. During this process, the hydrogen gas that escapes creates millions of tiny air cells, rendering AAC with a strong cellular structure. AAC blocks are further strengthened by high-pressure steam curing in autoclaves. The product thus formed is not only lightweight but also has higher Compressive strength.
Disadvantage:
AAC has been produced for more than 70 years, however, some disadvantages were found when it was introduced in the UK (where cavity wall with clay brick two-skin construction has been the norm).
1. Installation during rainy weather:
(AAC is known to crack after installation, which can be avoided by reducing the strength of the mortar and ensuring the blocks are dry during and after installation.)
2. Brittle nature:
(AAC block is brittle in nature that means It can break easily. The presence of voids makes it brittle in nature.)
3. AAC Block is a Nonload Bearing material, it can be used only in wall partitions.
5. Their water absorption is very high. With this their expansion on absorbing water and contraction on losing moisture bring cracks in the structure.
6. If installed in high humidity environments, interior finishes require low vapor permeability and exterior finishes require high permeability.
7. Very few contractors are familiar with AAC Block but nowadays it is increasing day by day.
