Pakistan’s aid to Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah has been mired in controversy. Despite India swiftly granting airspace clearance for Pakistani relief flights, media in Pakistan falsely claimed India had blocked its airspace.
The controversy deepened when the Pakistan High Commission in Sri Lanka shared images of relief material containing expired food with October 2024 expiry dates, prompting netizens to accuse Pakistan of “disposing of garbage” in Sri Lanka. Pakistan’s foreign ministry continued to spread false claims, alleging delays from India.
In contrast, India delivered 53 tonnes of relief material via air and sea, including tents, blankets, ready-to-eat food, and hygiene kits. Eighty personnel from the NDRF’s Special Urban Search and Rescue Teams were dispatched. Over 2,000 stranded Indians were evacuated, while more than 150 affected Sri Lankans were assisted in coordinated operations. India’s response underscores its commitment to humanitarian aid and regional cooperation.
