DIY: How to install an aftermarket exhaust. F30 BMW 3 series, N20, N26 (328 to 335 conversion)

In this video I go through the process of installing an aftermarket exhaust made by Active Autowerke on my car a 2016 BMW 328xi M Sport. My engine is a N26 but the process should be the same for an N20.

The install without filming should take about 1.5 hours time and the net result is a much deeper exhaust note that is slightly louder than stock. The only other performance modifications the car has is an Injen Intake. I do not have JB4, Bootmod3 (BM3) or anything else.

Will an aftermarket exhaust system add horsepower?
Exhaust systems free up horsepower by reducing back pressure on the engine; so you can expect a little bit of a horsepower increase from an aftermarket exhaust system. I would say the typical horsepower gain you can expect from an aftermarket exhaust system is 10-15hp. It is important that you look at dyno charts for the exhaust you are considering purchasing as most manufacturers have tested this. A cat back exhaust system will add more horsepower than an axle back exhaust system.

What size exhaust should I get for my car?
The size of your exhaust is the measured diameter of the exhaust. Typically the diameter of the exhaust is the inner diameter where the gas flows through. Choosing the correct exhaust diameter will impact horsepower gains, how loud the exhaust will be, and how much or if any exhaust drone you will experience.

Will an aftermarket exhaust system be louder than my stock exhaust?
It is almost always the case the an aftermarket exhaust system will be louder than the stock exhaust that is in place. If you are concerned about how loud your exhaust will be, you should try to hear it in person on the same make and model car as yours. Youtube videos are a good frame of reference to understand tone but its best if you can listen to an exhaust in person.

Will I experience drone with an aftermarket exhaust?
Exhaust drone is one of the biggest concerns for people when purchasing an aftermarket exhaust system. Exhaust drone is the resonance that you could potentially hear at certain RPMs while driving your car. Exhaust drone is most annoying when it happens at the RPM you are driving at on the highway. Exhaust drone can very quickly reduce the enjoyment of your car if not resolved.

Will adding an exhaust to my car void my warranty?
It is difficult to say whether adding an exhaust to your car will void your warranty or not. While the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void your warranty or deny coverage under the warranty simply because you used an aftermarket or recycled part it does not mean that your car will not get flagged by the dealer or manufacturer as being modified. You should have a discussion with your service advisor about warranty coverage and their point of view on modifications voiding warranties before doing any modifications.
