Several groups and organizations have called for a nationwide strike, known as ‘Bharat Bandh,’ today to protest against the Supreme Court's recent ruling to exclude the “creamy layer" from the SC/ST quota.
The term creamy layer is used to describe a sub-section of a backward class or group which is economically, socially and educationally advanced.
What is the Row or Debate over sub-categorization?
While, there is no denying that some sub-castes within these groups have benefited more in comparison to other communities such as Valmiki, Dom, Mushahar, Madiga, and Matang, but does sub-categorization truly address the root cause of the problem?
Some also argue that the “creamy-layer” provision is absolutely unnecessary as caste-based reservation is not about poverty eradication; rather, it is a step towards social equity and justice.
In fact, there are numerous stances where we have seen economic mobility per se does not ensure social inclusivity.
