May 5th is ‘kodomo-no-hi’ or Children’s Day. This day is to celebrate children’s, especially boy’s growth and pray for their happiness, while girl’s day is March 3rd.
On children’s Day, people traditionally eat Kashiwa-mochi that is a rice cake containing sweet azuki bean paste and wrapped in a Kashiwa oak leaf. This mochi is a symbol of fertility and prosperity. Because oak trees don’t shed old leaves until they grow new leaves, they symbolize respect for and a link to one’s elders and ancestors.

2. Make koshian balls.
3. Rinse oak leaves and wipe them with paper towel.
4. Spread vegetable oil on the leaves with paper towel, so that the mochi won’t stick to the leaves.
5. Place jousin-powder which is made from rice.
6. Add shiratama powder which is mede from mochi. By adding shiratama powder, Kashiwa-mochi
will become stickier and more delicious!
7. Add sugar, and warm water in the bowl, and mix well.
8. Cover it with cling wrap and microwave it for 2 minutes.
9. Knead it well with a wet wooden spatula.
10. Cover it with cling wrap again and microwave it for another 2 minutes.
11. Knead it well with a wooden pestle, and soak it into ice water. By doing so, it will become
glossy. Then knead more.
12. Make it cylindrical shape and cut it into 5 pieces.
13. Flatten the dough and put koshian balls on it, then wrap it.
14. Wrap mochi with oak leaves.
