Marc Mureau, MD, PhD, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam, Netherlands, discusses the advantages of using a patient’s own tissue for breast reconstruction, particularly in those with previously irradiated breast tissue. Radiation causes significant damage to local tissue, compromising its quality. Introducing an implant in such conditions often results in severe tissue reactions, leading to higher rates of complications such as capsular contracture and wound infections, which may require implant removal. In contrast, autologous reconstruction using the patient's own tissue avoids these issues, offering a more durable, natural-feeling outcome with fewer complications.This interview took place at the ESSO 43 Congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
