Описание: Located in the county of Oxfordshire, and around 20 miles north of Oxford, is the town of Banbury.

The name 'Banbury' derives from 'Banna's burh', with 'burh' being a Saxon word for fortified settlement and 'Banna' being presumably the name of a Saxon chieftain. It is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Banesberie'.

During the 12th century, Banbury was owned by the Bishops of Lincoln. In 1135, Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln ordered the construction of Banbury Castle. The castle would later be destroyed following the English Civil War, leaving no remains.

From the 13th century, Banbury became known for its wool trade. By the Tudor era, leather-making became another major industry in the town. Many specialist markets were held in Banbury by the end of the 16th century, including a leather market, a horse market, a sheep market, a cattle market, a swine market, a corn market, and a flax market. On the culinary side, the town became known for Banbury cheese (up until the 19th century) and Banbury cakes (currant-filled pastries).

In 1628 a fire broke out, destroying over 100 houses in Banbury, which was about one third of those in the town at the time.

During the mid 18th century, the following nursery rhyme first appeared in print: "Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross, To see a Fine Lady upon a white horse, With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, She shall have music wherever she goes". During the Middle Ages, three crosses stood in different locations around the town. These were all destroyed by Puritans around the beginning of the 17th century. The cross featured in the walk dates from 1859 to commemorate the marriage of Princess Victoria, eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, to Prince Frederic of Prussia. The adjacent statue of the Fine Lady was unveiled in 2005 by Princess Anne.

In 1790 the Oxford Canal was completed. This provided Banbury with a direct link to Oxford, Coventry and other locations, thus providing a boost to trade in the town. Sixty years later, in 1850, the railway arrived at Banbury courtesy of Great Western Railway. Today it has direct links to London Marylebone, Birmingham, Oxford and Manchester among other locations.

In 1854, Banbury Town Hall was built in the Gothic Revival style. It is Grade II listed.

Banbury is represented in sport by Banbury United Football Club. Founded in 1931, they play their home games at the Spencer Stadium.
