You're not likely to see the sandhills cellophane bee unless you're in a specific part of the forest at a specific time of year. The bee specializes in blueberries and a relative of blueberries called the climbing fetterbush. Climbing fetterbush is a vine that crawls up under the bark of cypress trees, its flowers often popping up high above cypress wetlands. But they don't nest in the wet areas where climbing fetterbush is found: they need deep, soft, dune-like sand. So you can find them in sandhill habitats next to cypress wetlands. Because blueberries and fetterbush bloom in the late winter/ early spring, this is the only time of year we see them. It's a time of year when many native trees bloom for a few weeks, as well as other short-blooming wildflowers. It's a great time to see specialized bees that spend the rest of the year un der our feet.
The sandhills cellophane bee lives in such a specialized habitat, and it was only discovered in 2016. Read more on the WFSU Ecology Blog about efforts to find nesting sites for the bee: https://blog.wfsu.org/blog-coastal-he...
