It’s barley harvest here in north-central Montana, and we’re out in the fields running combines and trucks to bring the crop in. Barley is an important crop for Montana agriculture, grown for both feed and malting, and it plays a big role in rotations alongside wheat.

In this video, I take you along for a day in the cab, showing what it’s like to cut barley, the challenges that come with harvest, and the process of moving grain from the combine to the trucks. Farming is never the same two days in a row, but that’s what makes harvest such an important and exciting time.

Hello, I’m Kate Stephens, a 20-year-old 4th generation farmer from Montana. My family's roots in farming run deep, stretching back to 1912 when my great-grandfather emigrated from Denmark and began cultivating the land we still work today. Farming has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember; I started learning the ropes at just two years old and now operate one of our combines during harvest. I believe in the importance of understanding where our food comes from, and I hope to share that knowledge in a fun and engaging way through my YouTube videos and products.
