His Choice Vasectomy After Care Instructions

Extended release, long acting anesthesia is administered during a His Choice Vasectomy. This extended release anesthetic can provide up to 3 days of pain control. His Choice patients are encouraged to take over the counter anti-inflammatory medications as needed, provided with discharge instructions, and given their doctor's personal cell phone number to contact for any emergent concerns.


Patients are advised during the first 48 hours they should wear supportive underwear and not:
• Have sex or ejaculate
• Lift anything greater than 15 lbs
• Perform strenuous exertion

Patients are advised to take over the counter ibuprofen or naproxen for 48 hours after their vasectomy procedure.

Acetaminophen, or Tylenol, is a second alternative but does not work as well as ibuprofen or naproxen.

Patients should avoid aspirin for 48 hours because it could increase the risk of a bleeding complication.

Important considerations
· Frozen peas and ice are not necessary
· Keep gauze over the opening for 24 hours
· Can shower starting 24 hours after the vasectomy
· The opening will be closed in 1 to 2 days
· No immersion in a bath, hot tub, or other body of water for 5 days

Returning to work or sexual activity
• May return to work and sexual activity after 48 hours
• Taking anti-inflammatory medication during the week you return to work and wear supportive underwear
• Pink colored semen is temporary and normal
• Refrain from ejaculation for two days after their vasectomy procedure
• Perform a minimum of 20 ejaculations and wait for 3 months before returning a semen sample for evaluation.

Vasectomy studies have shown the passage of time is more important than the number of ejaculations when trying to prove vasectomy is successful.

Studies show that healthy moving sperm are rapidly cleared with ejaculation…usually within 6 to 8 weeks. After the healthy sperm have cleared, the residual sperm are often abnormal and more adherent to the walls of the vas deferens. These sperm may stubbornly persist long after the healthy sperm have cleared.

Studies looking at sperm clearance after vasectomy have observed
Weeks after vasectomy % of Men with no sperm
8 weeks after vasectomy 80%
12 weeks after vasectomy 95%
24 weeks after vasectomy 99%

By 3 months after vasectomy most men will have semen samples, which show no sperm. If a 3 month sample shows non moving sperm the test will be repeated in one month and most men will be cleared with the second test.

A 3 month sample is designed to give men enough time to clear their residual sperm but provide reasonable point in time where we should be able to detect most early vasectomy failures.
