In this Sunday’s homily for the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we reflect on Jesus’ powerful words from the Sermon on the Mount: “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13–16).
Unlike the Beatitudes, which speak of promises yet to be fulfilled, today’s Gospel speaks in the present tense. Jesus does not tell us to become salt and light. He reminds us that we already are. This truth changes everything. Our Christian identity is not a future goal but a lived reality.
Drawing from Sacred Scripture and lived experience, this homily explores the deep meaning of salt and light. Salt preserves, heals, purifies, and gives flavor. Light brings clarity, growth, joy, and life. Together, they describe the quiet yet powerful way disciples are called to transform the world, not through grand gestures, but through daily acts of love, mercy, and faithfulness.
Inspired by the first reading from Isaiah 58:7–10, we are reminded that our light rises when we feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the naked, comfort the afflicted, and stand with those who suffer. We are not asked to change the whole world, but to add flavor, warmth, and light wherever God has placed us.
As followers of Christ, remaining silent, indifferent, or inactive in the face of human suffering is not an option. When we live our faith authentically, others are drawn not to us, but to God, who is glorified through our love.
Watch this homily and be encouraged to live fully who you already are: salt that brings healing and light that leads others home.
