From Federal Prison To The FBI: Unseen Risks In White-Collar Crime Cases

Описание: In this live YouTube video, I revisit a speaking event from thirteen years ago at The FBI Academy on March 11, 2011. It was a day that left an indelible mark on my professional journey, offering relevant insights for those facing government investigations.

Memories at Quantico

I toured the FBI Academy on this day years ago, a place shrouded in cinematic legend and real-world significance. I was guided by several agents, including Paul Bertrand, the FBI agent who arrested me. He had invited me to speak, and through this gesture, I faced a direct connection to my past bad choices as a white collar defendant.

The Day the FBI Arrived

The FBI's visit on April 28, 2005, marked the beginning of a difficult chapter in my life. Those two agents showed up with boxes filled with all my emails from Bear Stearns and UBS; their presence signaled a problem I had yet to comprehend.

Missteps in Hiring a White-Collar Defense Attorney

In the chaos, I scrambled to find a white-collar defense attorney, making choices without fully understanding the gravity of my situation. I had no idea how to hire or vet a lawyer. I just guessed. Successful people do not guess. Then, when I hired the lawyer, I lied. He must have known I was lying, yet he did not dig deeper or inquire. The more I paid, the more tales he heard me spin.

Consequences of Deception

I met the FBI's questions with lies, a decision that was not only wrong, but I was also obstructing a federal investigation. Little did I know that my co-defendant had begun to cooperate and in so doing position himself for a much shorter federal prison sentence, even though he was more culpable.

The Power of Early Preparation

Paul Bertrand's question during my FBI Academy visit still echoes: "Why did you wait so long to prepare?" The truth is that I underestimated the system and overvalued time, leading to a harsher outcome than necessary.

Act Without Delay

I learned that postponing the confrontation of a government investigation only intensifies them. As I explain in this video, early and proactive mitigation is the only way.

Best,
