In this video, we guide you through how we printed a three-layer flexible circuit on heat-stabilized PET and validated the design of an LED roulette board that resists flexing with components populated.
About the LED roulette
The circuit functions like a roulette wheel: each time the pulse generator is triggered, the LEDs on the roulette PCB light up in a rapid circular sequence before slowing down and stopping on a single LED.
The design consists of a 555 pulse generator and a multilayer flexible circuit for the LED roulette, developed by ITIZ, Voltera’s partner in Korea. We modified their original rigid PCB design to a flexible version printed on coated PET.
We divided the design into three layers:
Bottom conductive layer: Printed with ACI Materials’ FS0142 Semi-Sintering Conductive Ink
Dielectric layer: Printed with ACI Materials’ SI3104 Stretchable Printed Silver Insulator
Top conductive layer: Printed with ACI Materials’ FS0142 Semi-Sintering Conductive Ink
By printing a dielectric layer and a crossover layer on top of the bottom conductive layer, we were able to create a compact and lightweight roulette without using jumpers.
About flexible PCBs
Flexible printed circuit boards (FPCBs) include single- or double-sided PCBs, multilayer PCBs, and rigid-flex PCBs. They are bendable circuits made from flexible materials like polyimide. FPCBs are commonly used in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive systems, medical devices, and aerospace because they fit into compact or curved spaces.
Lightweight, adaptable designs are crucial for the development of flexible electronics. Using direct ink writing (DIW) machines, flexible PCBs can be printed by depositing conductive inks onto flexible substrates, enabling efficient and customizable production.
