SCARY OBJECTS w TRUST
BUILDING METHOD
INTRODUCE DOG
Like waking into a fire, some dogs can be highly anxious in areas that they have had little exposure & even worse - if a rescued dog has had a previous hurtful, scary, or trust broken experience may take longer. Trust is earned & built, not forced. This takes patience; each dog is different. Respect fear: don't baby fear.
PATTERN REPLACEMENT
w PROBLEM ANXIETY
To replace the dog's anxiety pattern; which they show through a bark/growl & jump/run reaction pattern they need to see & experience an alternative replacement pattern.
ANTIDOTE FOR ANXIETY
Allow dog to use/discover his nose, eyes & ears pattern though encouraging the dog to walk calmly through graduated levels of increased stimulus/energy. Introduce the dog to higher energy areas, walk through calmly and encourage sniffing, looking and walking ahead as opposed to bolting, growling, barking or running.
1- LISTEN & LOOK AROUND
First, I walk around the area engaging & encouraging the dog to use their nose, over their fight or flight reaction; next I walk through the 'preceived fire', and repeat. For some dogs, it may take a few days of this type of exposure therapy in order to see the dog begin to physically calm down. Then, next, when calm enough, I ask them to actually sit, for like 10 - 15 seconds.
2 - DON'T FORCE OR HURRY
Rather then pulling and making the dog go, I use what I call
3 - ENCOURAGE THE DOG
The dog can be encouraged with both food and calm, gentle, talking.
4 - LET THE DOG LEAD
There are only a few circumstances that I allow the dog to actually lead the handler, and this is one of those exceptions. The purpose is to give the dog more confidence by allowing its curiosity to emerge over its fear. This is the one and only time I let the dog go slightly ahead of the handler.
DOG NOTE
I never let the dog lead accept for one exception. When it is shy. nervous, anxious or scared.
5 - LEASH TAUNT NOT TIGHT
In very few circumstances I will allow a taunt leash; but not tight. I allow a bit of pulling, so, in the scared dog's case, the dog can acctually feel 'in charge' and I am right there with them. I do not, however, let them bolt, lunge, or pull or panic pull.
6 - REPEAT TO DE-SENSITISE
The idea of repeating pattern in order to desensitise the dog, is kinda like waving a feather infront of a cat; eventually the cat will yawn and fall asleep. So, I repeat the process of immersion/exposure therapy over a few to many days; depending on the dog and how long it takes to build trust and physically, calm down.
DOG NOTE:
CREATE A CALM DOG - By repeated patterns, the dog will begin to recognize & respond to the patten.
7 - PRESSURE ABIT, SHOW DOG LEASH CAN RELEASE
Show dog release of pressure on the leash can be a reward and pattern a repeated example until you see the dog automate by not pulling against the leash, and physically calming itself down = self-control.
DOG NOTE:
When the stimulus/energy lowers abit have the SIT DOG
