annual water balances over India

Understanding how precipitation is partitioned into runoff and evapotranspiration is essential for assessing water availability, especially in ungauged watersheds. This video presents a nationwide assessment across 793 watersheds in India using machine learning and regression models to estimate the key Budyko parameter ω, which represents intrinsic watershed characteristics.
By integrating ANN and Relevance Vector Machine (RVM) models with seasonality and vegetation dynamics (NDVI), the study captures intra-annual variability in water balance more effectively than traditional approaches. Results show that ANN and RVM outperform conventional regression methods, with vegetation playing a stronger role during low-NDVI periods. The improved framework enhances the Budyko-based estimation of water availability, offering a robust tool for hydrological assessment and planning in data-scarce and ungauged basins across India.
