Kalash culture in Pakistan:
Greetings and Meetings:
• Verbal Greetings:
The most common greeting among Kalasha people is “Ishpata”, which means hello/welcome. It’s used when they meet anyone, Kalash or outsider.
• Response to Greeting:
The usual reply to “Ishpata” is “Ishpata wus”, which means hello to you too.
• Hugs & Handshakes:
Among men, handshakes are common. Among close family and friends, especially women, hugging or a friendly cheek touch may occur—though this is reserved for familiar individuals.
2. Community and Social Gathering:
• Kalash people live in tightly-knit communities, so they meet regularly during:
• Festivals (like Chilim Joshi, Uchau, and Chaumos)
• Weddings, funerals, or communal feasts
• Work and daily routines, such as fetching water or working in fields
3. Respect and Politeness:
• Elders are highly respected – when young people meet elders, they often greet them first, sometimes standing up if seated.
• Visitors are warmly welcomed with food and often a place to sit, especially during special occasions.
4. Cultural Identity:
• Meeting each other also involves sharing news, singing songs, and sometimes dancing — their culture encourages expression through music.
Kalash zoshi Festival
Overview of Zoshi (Joshi) Festival
• Celebrated in: Mid-May (usually from May 14 to May 16)
• Purpose: To welcome spring and pray for a good harvest.
• Significance: It marks the end of harsh winter and celebrates rebirth, fertility, and the blossoming of nature.
⸻
Cultural Highlights
• Traditional Dress: Women wear elaborately embroidered black robes, beaded jewelry, and colorful headgear (susutr), while men don traditional woolen cloaks and caps.
• Music and Dance: The valleys echo with traditional drums and flute music as men and women form dance circles. The rhythmic cha dance is a central element.
• Milk Ceremony: For several days before the festival, milk from the livestock is collected and stored. On the main day, it is offered to the spirits in a ritualistic way.
• Rituals and Offerings: They offer food, flowers, and milk to their deities. The Kalash believe in nature spirits, and these offerings are meant to ensure blessings and protection.
⸻
📍 Where to See It
• The best place to witness the Zoshi Festival is Bumburet Valley, the most accessible and tourist-friendly of the three Kalash valleys.
• Rumbur and Birir have more traditional, less commercialized celebrations, offering a deeper cultural experience.
