Sandfield Road's most famous inhabitant was J. R. R. Tolkien, whose books The Fellowship of the Ring , The Two Towers and The Return of the King were published while he lived here. On my way up the road, I take a look at the house and at Bill Brown's stone plaque from the 1970s, with its carvings of Smaug, The Hill, and Bag End.
