His parents, Elvera Sanchez and Sammy Davis Sr., performed as vaudevillians, while dancing with the Will Mastin Troupe. Sammy Davis, Jr. began performing with Mastin's Troupe at age three. At age five, he began traveling with his father through the vaudeville circuit on a regular basis. By the time he was eight years old he had appeared in two movies.

He was drafted into the army in 1943. Eventually, he was transferred into an entertainment regiment where he performed for the troops. After returning from the military in 1950 , he began performing solo as the result of his signing a recording contract with Decca Records. "Starring Sammy Davis, Jr." and "Just for Lovers," were his first albums. He was involved in a serious automobile accident in the California desert on November 19, 1954. While recovering from his injuries, he converted to Judaism.
