Ozoni (お雑煮) is a mochi soup that we eat along with Osechi Ryori (traditional dishes) on New Year’s Day in Japan. The preparation for ozoni varies both by household and region.
Yakimochi is grilled or broiled mochi or pounded rice cake. Traditionally, it is prepared using a small charcoal grill, but in modern times a gas grill can be used. During the time of the Autumn Moon, it is traditional to eat fresh yakimochi while sipping sake and enjoying the view of the full moon.
As the ozoni is a New Year's dish, the ingredients which go into it are added for auspiciousness or have a special meaning. For example, as mochi is stretchable and can be pulled long, it represents longevity. Local produce is added to pray for a bountiful harvest in the coming Year
