In this video, Prof. Ben Jorns of the University of Michigan discusses the research he is performing on advancing our understanding of electric plasma propulsion, and bringing distant worlds a bit closer.
Getting robotic spacecraft into space is the business of big rockets, but that is just the first step. Once you are in space, you still need to navigate your spacecraft to your destination – the moon, comets, Mars, asteroids, the outer planets. The more efficiently this navigation can be done, the less weight must be devoted to the propulsion systems of the spacecraft, and the more weight can be devoted to the actual instruments used on the mission. This is the realm of electric propulsion – the use of electrically produced plasmas as the thrust to efficiently accelerate spacecraft to distant worlds.
