I know what you're thinking - there's no such thing as a flea circus - right? Wrong! Flea circuses have been documented as far back as 1578. One of the most famous early flea showmen was L. Bertolotto, who has been credited with popularizing the flea circus in both Europe and America, and was considered one of the foremost authorities on the art of flea exhibition. Professor Roy Heckler and his World Famous Trained Flea Circus was one of the featured acts at The Hubert's Museum and Flea Circus, located in Times Square, New York City, NY (1920s to 1965). An internet inquiry on the history of the flea circus will yield the interested researcher a wealth of information on the subject, including some of the original playbills and, in some cases, actual newsreel footage. Since the 1500s, flea circuses have featured these miraculous insects performing a wide array of feats, primarily involving pulling or pushing various objects around miniature stages - most with the aid of painstakingly crafted harnesses of varying materials and levels of ingenuity. Despite their one-time popularity among all walks of society, from the crowned heads of Europe to the average citizenry, flea circuses began fading into obscurity around the mid 1900s and today have become rare to the extent that most consider them as nothing more than lore.
