I paid my own way to be your personal crash-test dummy at this 59-room resort, just outside Jaipur. Sure, the welcome was warm, and the fort’s history is fascinating, but that’s where the charm started to fade. The pool? Beautiful—if you like waiting 30 minutes for a drink. The restaurants? Two out of three miss the mark. But hey, there’s a kids club, so maybe the little ones won’t mind the lack of atmosphere.

Alila Fort Bishangarh is about 1.5 hours from Jaipur and a solid five-hour drive from Delhi, so you’ll work for your stay. The resort boasts three restaurants (though "boasts" might be a stretch here), a spa, and a single pool where service is a bit hit-or-miss. If you’re in the mood for a mountain escape with great views—just don’t expect sunset seating—it might be worth a visit. But if luxury is what you’re after, there are definitely better options out there.
