Rajgad Fort is one of the most famous and historically important forts in Maharashtra and the first capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Located near Pune in the Sahyadri mountain range, Rajgad played a major role in the rise of the Maratha Empire and the establishment of Hindavi Swarajya.

Originally known as Murumbdev Fort, it was captured and developed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1645 and later renamed Rajgad, meaning “King of Forts.” For nearly 25 years (1648–1672), Rajgad served as the capital of Swarajya before the capital was shifted to Raigad Fort.

The structure of Rajgad is unique and consists of three major machis (plateaus) and a central citadel:
• Padmavati Machi – the main residential and administrative area
• Suvela Machi – a strategic watch point used to monitor enemy movement
• Sanjeevani Machi – famous for its strong double fortification walls
• Balekilla – the central citadel and the strongest defensive structure of the fort

Rajgad also witnessed many important events in Maratha history. It was an important political center where several key strategies for the expansion of Swarajya were planned. Today, Rajgad Fort is also one of the most popular trekking destinations in Maharashtra, offering stunning views of the Sahyadri mountains and nearby forts such as Torna Fort.

राजगड किल्ला हा महाराष्ट्रातील सर्वात प्रसिद्ध आणि ऐतिहासिक किल्ल्यांपैकी एक आहे. पुण्याजवळील सह्याद्री पर्वतरांगांमध्ये वसलेला हा किल्ला छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांची पहिली राजधानी म्हणून ओळखला जातो.

पूर्वी या किल्ल्याचे नाव मुरुंबदेव किल्ला असे होते. छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांनी सन १६४५ मध्ये हा किल्ला ताब्यात घेतला आणि त्याचा विकास करून त्याचे नाव राजगड ठेवले. सुमारे २५ वर्षे राजगड हा स्वराज्याची राजधानी होता. स्वराज्याच्या अनेक महत्त्वाच्या योजना आणि निर्णय याच किल्ल्यावरून घेतले गेले.

राजगड किल्ल्यावर पद्मावती माची, सुवेळा माची आणि संजीवनी माची या तीन प्रमुख माच्या आहेत आणि मध्यभागी बालेकिल्ला आहे. मजबूत बांधणी, दुर्गम रचना आणि रणनीतिक स्थान यामुळे राजगड हा अत्यंत सुरक्षित किल्ला मानला जात होता.
