"I have grown to admire President Toledo for his strength of character, his clear vision, his willingness to make difficult decisions. Even sometimes when the popularity polls suggest he do something differently. Leadership requires strength of character, the willingness to make tough choices."

"I always admire this about my friend. He says that one of his biggest goals was to reduce poverty. And he recognises that while progress is being made, a lot of progress, that more needs to be done. He cares deeply about the people of Peru. He's got a 'corazon gigante'." ('big heart' in Spanish)

"Peru and Latin America are partners with the United States in more than just a free trade agreement. It's a very important free trade agreement, because it generates jobs, it enables a continued sustained rate of economic growth and reduce poverty. But we're also partners in strengthening the democratic values in the region. We're also partners in the fights against narco-trafficking and terrorism."

"After I finish and pass away the power to the next president, Peruvians and Latin Americans do not want to go through these cycles that create instability, that does not attract capital investment to continue growth, to continue growth, to generate jobs, to invest more in health, nutrition, education and to reduce poverty."

STORYLINE:
Peru's President Alejandro Toledo met for talks with US President George W. Bush at the White House on Friday, as he prepares to leave office later this year.
Bush and Toledo have been close friends over the years they have both been in power.
Bush said he admired the Peruvian leader's determination to reduce poverty in his country, and complimented Toledo on what he described in Spanish as his 'big heart'.
Toledo, who is constitutionally barred from running for another presidential term this year, is scheduled to step down as president in July.
He told Bush that the work the two have done in creating a free trade agreement and reducing poverty would continue under the leadership of a new president because the Peruvian people want a strong economic future.
Toledo will meet with other officials in the Bush administration during his short visit to Washington.
