Reflections on Bear Markets — Simon Brewer

Описание: Alum Simon Brewer talks about the important cyclical and structural bear markets in asset classes, ranging from to commodities and currencies.

The Department of Economic History, in association with the Economic History Advisory Board (EHAB) are pleased to support this event, which will be a journey through some of the important cyclical and structural bear markets in asset classes, ranging from equities to commodities and currencies. Simon will offer perspectives on the causes and historic behaviours of market participants and draw lessons from these as well as reflections, having lived through them as an investor.

In addition to gaining some useful insights about the behaviour of different asset classes, the historic parallels will be examined, pointing to the predictability of human behaviour when confronted with the polarities of fear and greed.

A robust Q&A session afterwards will allow students to ask about working in financial services, the evolution of investing practices and reflections and advice gained from 35 years in the industry.

This event is aimed primarily at taught students within the Department of Economic History (undergraduates and master's), but all LSE students and staff are welcome.

About Simon Brewer

Simon Brewer was educated at Clifton College, Bristol, graduated from the London School of Economics with a degree in Economic History, and subsequently took the Advanced Management Programme at INSEAD, France. He also attended Buckingham University’s Military History programme.

Simon began his career at Citibank before joining Morgan Stanley in 1989. Since 2006 he has been CEO and an owner of Vantage Investment Advisory Ltd, as well as being a senior advisor to Rothschild and Co in London. He is a Governor or Clifton College and Chairman of their charitable development trust, served as a Trustee of Great Ormond Street Hospital, and is Co-Founder of the MoneyMaze Podcast.

About Alison Kennedy

Alison Kennedy is Managing Director for ASEAN within Accenture Strategy. Her role focuses on advising companies and governments on business strategy, operating models, digital strategies and innovation, cost management, customer strategies, human capital management, large-scale business transformation and organizational change. Previously, Ms Kennedy was the head of strategy consulting for Accenture Greater China and was also the Accenture Financial Services lead for strategy across the Asia Pacific region. Her career has been spent in London, Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Ms Kennedy has degrees in Economics, Economic History and Finance from LSE, University of London. She is based in Singapore.
