The John Rylands Library holds one of the oldest surviving manuscript copies of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. This is not a book, but an object regarded by those of the Sikh faith as the embodiment of their eleventh Guru.
The Provenance of the Sri Guru Granth is known, it came to be part of the library collections with the acquisition of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana by Enriqueta Rylands in 1908, and has been in the Library ever since. Before this, it was sold by Quaritch of London to Lord Lindsay, after it had been taken in the battle of Gujrat in 1868, where it was 'Wrested from the hands of a Sikh Priest'.
The John Rylands Library is working closely with the Sikh community in Manchester as part of the Sikh Digital Heritage Project, an initiative to connect members of the community with collections of significant cultural heritage. The Library have respectfully conserved, digitised and re housed the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, following close guidance from the Sikh community.
For the first time in 175 years, April 2024 saw the Guru transported to the Sri Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara in Whalley Range, Manchester to be revered during the annual Vaisakhi festival. Most recently in July 2024, the Guru again left the Rylands to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurdwara in Moss Side Manchester.
This video shows the ceremony carried out by members of the Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurdwara, Hardev Heera Singh, Sukhwinder Singh, Subheg Singh, Gurshaan Singh and project leader Gurtek Singh, as the Sri Guru Granth Sahib leaves the Rylands on the way to the Gurdwara.
