In April 2022, the CDF collaboration at Fermilab published the most precise measurement of the W boson's mass ever made. The result differed from the Standard Model prediction by seven standard deviations. In particle physics, five sigma is considered a discovery. Seven sigma is extraordinary. Yet every subsequent measurement from other experiments found values consistent with the Standard Model.
In this video, Brian Greene explores the full landscape of precision anomalies in particle physics: the W boson and the radiative corrections involving the top quark and the Higgs boson; why the CDF result lies seven sigma away from the Standard Model prediction; why ATLAS and LHCb measure values consistent with the Standard Model; the B-meson anomalies at LHCb and their partial resolution in 2022; the muon's anomalous magnetic moment and the ongoing debate over hadronic vacuum polarization; and what a decade of null results at the LHC, followed by a series of precision anomalies, means for the future of the field.
The particle that shouldn't exist may—or may not—exist. This is the physics.
