The bottom layer of substrate is extremely important in a naturalistic vivarium. This false bottom allows a place for excess water to go, preventing root rot in plants, among many other benefits. Above the false bottom lies the substrate barrier. This keeps a separation between the false bottom and other substrate layers, extending their life spans. ABG is a fantastic mix of charcoal, sphagnum, peat, & fir bark, and we use this atop the substrate barrier. Great for plants and pets - easily a must-have! Long Fiber Sphagnum Moss on top of the ABG is great for moisture retention and humidity purposes. A bag of leaf litter will do wonders, providing hiding places for dart frogs, and eventually providing a food source for micro-fauna and plants.
