This is the story of a ginger girl we named Peaches. She was a very sick singleton, lying alone in a shelter and struggling to breathe. She definitely would not have made it had she stayed there. For three weeks she had to be isolated until all her tests came back negative.
Once she started feeling better, my husband began spending more time with her—giving her fresh air, attention, and enrichment. Integration with the other kits was a breeze… she was accepted into the Fruit Salad by Mango and Kiwi pretty quickly. She was social yet independent, and I learned early on that she would be fine being adopted alone, as long as her new family had friendly kitties for her to play with.
Finding the perfect family for Peaches wasn’t difficult. She had a lot of interest, but after communicating back and forth with one lady from another state, I knew she was the one. She sounded like the type of kitty mom who would do anything for her kids—patient, kind, and committed. She made arrangements to fly in and meet Peaches in person. She told me more than once that if Peaches said no, she would accept it and go home. I knew that wasn’t going to happen, but I appreciated that she was willing to respect Peaches’ wishes no matter what.
My husband was especially drawn to Peaches. I asked if it was because she’d been so sick and he helped her get better. He said yes... “But just look at her.” He’s made connections with other fosters, but Peaches made a different kind of impact on him. When it was time to find her forever home, I asked if he was sure. He said yes—as long as she was going to "that lady".
How do we know someone is the right one? We look at the application, we check references… but at the end of the day, I follow my heart and listen to my gut. When I met "the lady", she was exactly who I hoped she would be—gentle and kind. Peaches responded to that.
They had an overnight sleepover, and the next morning she told me Peaches had jumped onto the bed and snuggled with her. They flew home together. Fast forward a few days, and integration couldn’t have gone more beautifully. Peaches has already met her three forever siblings, and yesterday her mom sent me a photo of her and her sister cuddle-puddling.
You know that feeling when all the weight finally leaves your upper body and you can let out a long breath? I did that—knowing Peaches is home. That little girl who once lay sick in a tiny box is now treated like the princess she deserves to be.
Happy new beginning, Princess Peaches! 🧡
