The Adagio from Alessandro Marcello’s Oboe Concerto in D minor, composed in the early 18th century, is renowned for its expressive lyricism and elegant phrasing. Originally written for oboe, strings, and continuo, the movement exemplifies the Venetian Baroque style with its poignant melodic line and rich harmonic texture. Its fame grew significantly when Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) transcribed the entire concerto for solo keyboard (BWV 974), preserving the Adagio’s emotional depth in a new instrumental context. Long misattributed to Vivaldi and later to Marcello’s brother Benedetto, the piece has since been correctly credited to Alessandro and remains one of the most beloved slow movements in the Baroque repertoire.
