In this session from the Data Analyst Playbook Community (Cohort 2), we discuss one of the most important skills every data analyst must develop — business understanding.
Many beginners jump straight into tools like Excel, SQL, Power BI, or Python without fully understanding the business problem behind the data. In this class, we explain how professional analysts approach problems by first understanding the organisation, stakeholders, and business objectives before performing any analysis.
During the session, students were introduced to a Rail Operations Analytics case study, where they will analyse a large dataset simulating a rail company’s operations. The project includes passenger traffic data, ticket sales, routes, stations, and pricing tables.
Students will learn how to:
Translate business questions into data questions
Build proper data models
Identify traffic patterns and peak demand
Analyse revenue performance
Generate actionable business insights
