Описание: "The Crown of Love," painted by Sir John Everett Millais in 1875, depicts a scene from the poem by George Meredith of the same name. In the poem, a suitor of the Princess of France is told by the King that to win her hand in marriage, he must carry her in his arms to the top of a mountain without a break, even to catch his breath. Deeply in love, he agrees. At first, he bounds up the mountain. Down below, members of the court take bets on whether or not he will succeed. But it is an impossible task, and eventually his body breaks down. The princess begs him to stop and rest, realizing that he will die if he continues. He looks to the skies and believes his task is almost won, so he continues on, until he perishes from exhaustion. "Thou diest," the princess laments... "Then with thee I die." The lovers are united, but only in the afterlife.
