Freshly back in Hawaii!

What a crazy life… I got back to Hawaii on 2 July.

I didn’t bring a board over with me this time, so on the third I picked up a board that Frank had freighted over from Maui. It was in one piece! It’s always a fear that gear will get damaged in transit. I opened up the Board at the freight depo and I just couldn’t believe how good it looked! I went a bit bigger this time 9’1 17.75” 122.5L and it feels great. Anyway we’ll see the board in the upcoming videos. Although just a quick note the extra size has been amazing. Plenty of volume for floating me and the width that nearly 18 inches is probably as narrow as I’ll go more. The beauty of Frank Board once upon Foil the board disappears… so 9 foot might sound long but it doesn’t feel like it.

I rented a room near the exit point of the Hawaii’kai run. Typically I do this when I stay somewhere for downwinding. I like to stay at the bottom it means I can drive my car to the top to the run drop the gear off at the room get changed and at worst to get an Uber back to the top to pick up the car. It’s just a very self contained method as a backup and makes you less reliant on others. So that was really good I did three or four runs before this one I didn’t do any filming… 😅 and each of the runs were successes. I guess if I’m being picky one of the runs did feel under foiled when I chucked on a race Foil… I found that the Foil was faster than the ocean and I had to work quite hard to keep it going. This is all great learnings because I am still unsure about what to use for the big races the inter island races. I’ve been chatting to as many people as I can about the conditions and what to expect. Tomo gave me some great advice about sizing a foils and what to expect also Dave Kalama yesterday gave me some wisdom. He basically said the first channel crossing is an exploration and a learning endeavour and to make sure whatever gear is being used as comfortable and reliable as possible. With all of these advices and there has been many more I am leaning towards the 1160 fireball on the ultra short 64 fuse and 50 skinny stabiliser which I think is around 155 cm attached with the 76 mast.

So anyway this race was the short version most of the pros went and did the longer Allen Davies run. There was a cut-off time and it was recommended that if you hadn’t done that longer run before don’t push it because if you miss the cut-off time you won’t be included in the overall standings… the overall standards being the M2o and M2 M triple crown. I’ve also heard that the longer run is terrible with a lot of back backwash and that seemed to be the case in the race as well… a lot of the guys had trouble even the top guys… so I’m glad I went with the standard Hawaii Kai run.

Actually feel like I have a bit of a virus as I wrote this so I won’t make it too long I need to rest.
