Hidden among the woods and villages of Leicestershire are the forgotten remains of the Charnwood Forest Railway — a line that once carried passengers and freight through one of the most scenic parts of the Midlands.
In this video I explore the route of this long-lost railway, walking along the old trackbed and searching for the surviving clues left behind. From overgrown cuttings and hidden embankments to bridges and station sites, traces of the railway can still be found if you know where to look.
Opened in the late 19th century, the Charnwood Forest Railway connected communities across the forest and played an important role in transporting local goods and passengers. But like many rural branch lines, changing travel patterns and declining traffic eventually led to its closure.
Today the railway has largely disappeared into the landscape, but its story still survives in the earthworks, structures and history of the area.
Join me as I walk the route of this forgotten Leicestershire railway and uncover what remains of the lost Charnwood Forest line.
