The Class 93 is a next-generation tri-mode locomotive developed by Stadler for use in the UK, ordered by Rail Operations Group (ROG). It’s designed to combine efficiency, versatility, and reduced emissions, making it ideal for modern freight and high-speed logistics operations.

What makes it special is its tri-mode power system:
25kV AC overhead electric – for clean, high-performance running on electrified main lines

Onboard diesel engine – for flexibility on non-electrified routes

Battery power – for low-emission operations in sensitive urban areas or during shunting

This setup allows the Class 93 to reduce reliance on diesel fuel, lower carbon emissions, and offer faster acceleration compared to traditional freight locomotives. It’s based on Stadler’s EuroDual platform but modified to meet UK standards and loading gauge.
