Biography
Miyamoto Tsuruzō Shihan (宮本 鶴蔵)
Miyamoto Tsuruzō Shihan is a senior instructor of the Aikikai Hombu Dojo (Tokyo) and one of the most recognizable contemporary teachers associated with Hombu’s postwar line of transmission. He began Aikido in 1971 while studying at the University of Fukuoka, training for four years under Suganuma Mamoru Sensei (Aikikai delegate instructor at the time).
Guillaume Erard Aikido
Deeply inspired after seeing a demonstration by Second Doshu Ueshiba Kisshomaru, he chose to pursue Aikido professionally and entered Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo in the mid-1970s, beginning a long period of intensive practice and service within the Hombu environment.
In an interview, Miyamoto Shihan describes training under Kisshomaru Doshu from the late 1970s through the early 1990s, and he notes the formative impact of serving as a partner in demonstrations and seminars—where he learned key principles such as vision, timing, and correct placement.
Over decades at Hombu, Miyamoto Shihan became especially known for his highly structured pedagogy, including long responsibility for beginner instruction, emphasizing solid basics and the avoidance of bad habits from the start.
He has also served on the Hombu examination board, where he stresses sincere expression and real embodied progress over imitation or “pretty” forms.
In recognition of his contribution and seniority, Miyamoto Tsuruzō was promoted to 8th dan at the Aikikai Kagami Biraki (2016).
