Expertise is developed over time in our domains of understanding. In this video, I explore four domains in which experts think differently than novices: Connections, Big Ideas, Perception, and Patterns. I use a sketchnote layout to provide visuals and show relationships between each domain.
A concept I mention but don't dive into too deep in this video is the "learning schema." The concept of a schema was introduced by Jean Piaget and describes mental constructs we build about the world. As we have experiences, those are either assimilated into existing schemas (or existing understandings) or we adapt and form new schemas to better understand the situation.
