If there’s one thing mountain bikers love, it’s customization. Riders do all kinds of things to personalize their beloved two-wheeled companions ranging from upgrading tires, putting on colored valve stems, stickers and even paint; however, others prefer more… unorthodox customization methods. Today I am attempting one such method. See, I don’t have a riding buddy a majority of my time biking so sometimes you have to get creative for companionship. My goal is to attach my Amazon Echo Dot somewhere on my mountain bike so that I can always have Alexa to talk to. Yes. I could have just used the Alexa app on my phone, but where’s the challenge in that? Now I know what you’re thinking, why not use Google Home? That’s because I don’t have a Google Home… duh. The first hurdle was determining the method of attaching Alexa to my bike. I considered strapping it to my backpack strap; however, I was creating a mountain bike upgrade, not a backpack upgrade. After maneuvering through my self-limiting hurdles, I decided to put the Echo Dot on my stem as this would still technically be on my bike and would hopefully be able to pick up my voice well. In short, this was not pretty, but I think the eventual solution was at the very least operational. Against all odds, I had done it. I had turned my bike into K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t get far without my first technical problem. That wouldn’t stop me though! I remedied the issue and pressed on eager to see just how useless this endeavor was.
