Filmed at Harvester Technical College on December 16, 2016. Retired engineer and school volunteer, Peter Pilbeam, demonstrates the vintage 1990 Hercus PC200 CNC lathe and puts the old machine through its paces "Holding Tips & Spitting Chips"!
Background: many Hercus CNC machines were sold to Government schools across Australia during the mid 1980's to late 1990's. Some of these machines were used by progressive teachers and were ultilised by the students. Unfortunately many of these machines weren't used and were hidden away out of sight to rot. This particular machine was found at in a back storeroom at one of our sister campuses. It had very little work and still had the original packing grease on most parts of the machine. The old dos computer was missing and so was the internal card that spoke to the machine. We spent approximately $1500 getting it running again. This included purchasing a second hand PC card from Simon at Applied Numeric Control in Adelaide. We also purchased a new tool post and set of carbide tips / holders from Craig at Iscar Tooling Australia.
