All wounds, whether caused by unexpected trauma, chronic disease, or planned surgery, carry the risk of causing psychological distress for patients in the immediate and long term. The resulting scars may act as a lifelong reminder of a traumatic time and so all health care professionals involved in the treatment of wounds have a responsibility to assess and support a patient’s psychological state at each stage of healing.
