Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club, often simply called Barassie Links, is a premier 27-hole links complex located on the outskirts of Troon on Scotland’s southwest coast. It is highly regarded as a "hidden gem," offering a championship-level test that is frequently used for Open Championship Final Qualifying.
The Course Layout
The club features 27 holes divided into two distinct offerings:
The Barassie Links (18 holes): This is the main championship layout. It is a unique hybrid consisting of nine holes from the original 1894 routing and nine holes added during a significant expansion in 1997.
The Hillhouse Nine: Composed of the remaining nine holes from the original layout, this course is shorter (approx. 2,800 yards) but provides a fun, challenging warm-up or a quicker round for those not looking for a full championship test.
Key Characteristics
Traditional Links Terrain: Expect classic links features like humps, hollows, undulating fairways, and deep pot bunkers. While it sits near the coast, it is set slightly inland, meaning you won’t always see the sea, but you will certainly feel the coastal wind.
Signature Greens: Barassie is famous for having some of the best-maintained putting surfaces in Scotland. The greens are often fast, firm, and heavily tiered, requiring precise approach shots and a soft touch with the putter.
Aesthetic Hazards: The course is framed by extensive gorse, heather, and broom, which add both beauty and a stern penalty for wayward shots.
The Railway Influence: Authentic to many great Scottish links, a railway line runs alongside the course, which adds to the traditional atmosphere and provides a "boundary" hazard on several holes.
Historical & Professional Significance
Established 1887: Originally formed in Kilmarnock before moving to the current Barassie site in 1894.
Walker Cup Heritage: The club holds a unique distinction as the most represented club in Walker Cup history, with four members appearing in five different competitions.
Championship Venue: Beyond Open Qualifying, it has hosted the Women's Amateur Championship, the Junior Open, and the Scottish Amateur.
Visitor Experience
Barassie is known for being remarkably "visitor-friendly" compared to some of its more exclusive neighbors like Royal Troon.
Accessibility: It is located directly opposite the Barassie railway station, making it one of the easiest courses to reach from Glasgow (approx. 35 minutes) without a car.
Atmosphere: The clubhouse is frequently described as warm and welcoming, retaining a traditional feel while offering modern amenities
