This annual event celebrates the rich apple - growing heritage of Saltspring Island, British Columbia, featuring over 300 different apple varieties grown organically on the island.

In addition to celebrating the apple - growing community, the festival also highlights the efforts of individuals working to preserve and promote organic apple farming in British Columbia.

We talked with Sara Harker about the very important issues that the BC Organic Farmers are currently dealing with !

Sara Harker is co - owner of Harker's Organics & operates a fifth - generation family farm located at 2238 Highway 3, Cawston, BC.

The farm is renowned for its 100% certified organic produce, including heirloom tomatoes, hot peppers, squash, peaches, nectarines, apples, pears, cherries, plums, apricots, eggplant, and cucumbers.

They also produce organic soft apple cider, fruit wines, and preserves.

Their products are available at various retailers, including Whole Foods Market, Choices Market, Coop, Safeway, IGA, Discovery Organics, SPUD.ca, and Buy Low.

Sara has been a vocal advocate for organic apple farmers in BC, particularly in light of challenges posed by corporate consolidation in the industry.

Supporting BC's Organic Apple Farmers :

In 2024, she was among the apple growers demanding a seat at the table during discussions about the future of BC Tree Fruits, a cooperative that faced bankruptcy proceedings.

Sara emphasized the need for essential resources like bins, storage, and food safety measures to ensure the survival of small -
scale organic apple farms.

Through partnerships with organizations like The Star Group, Harker's Organics is working to create a secure and sustainable food system, enhancing the value, consistency, and time-to-market of their products.

This collaboration aims to support multi-generational organic farms and ensure the future of BC's organic apple industry.

Cider Tastings : Enjoy local ciders made from island-grown apples.
