Reminder to self: Yes, Ghibli will go after Princess Mononoke, even when the localization rights to it were held by Miramax, Disney, and now GKids.

So less about Lain, but still kinda related: Lain is one of those anime which I think are among the earliest examples of animators trying to use computers for drawing the cells. Like they just said "Let's break out the Wacom tablets and go to town." The other example I can think of is Hakkenden: Legend of the Dog Star, in which one episode stood out from the rest in terms of animation style in just.....the worst way possible.

But even if I disliked the visual result, I still had to admire it. The disconnect from the pen and the drawing was just a wall I couldn't surmount. I need to be able to sketch and to erase precisely where I think the tip is.

So to now see computer-assisted art at the level of Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen, I actually find it quite moving. Or looking at side-by-sides of the original Evangelion and the Rebuild movies.
