STORYLINE

Iraqi National Guards and police on Tuesday inspected the scene of a car bombing that occurred in Baghdadi, a Euphrates River town about 150 kilometres (93 miles) north of Ramadi.

Officials said a suicide attacker detonated his vehicle near a police checkpoint in the town on Monday, killing several police and ING members.

A senior ING commander at the scene of the attack said four people were killed, but hospital officials reported seven died and nine were wounded.

Insurgents have intensified their campaign of violence against Iraq's fledgling security forces since the US-led assault on the town of Fallujah earlier this month.

Dozens of policemen, national guards and government soldiers have died in attacks throughout Iraq over the past two weeks.
